What Ankle Ligament Prevents Inversion?

The deltoid ligament is the primary ligament that prevents inversion of the ankle. The deltoid ligament is a thick, strong band of connective tissue located on the medial (inner) side of the ankle. It connects the medial malleolus (the bony prominence on the inner side of the ankle) to various bones in the foot, such as the talus, navicular, and calcaneus. During movements that may cause the ankle to turn inward, such as stepping on an uneven surface or making a sudden lateral movement while running, the deltoid ligament provides crucial resistance. It helps to keep the ankle joint in its proper alignment and limits the excessive inward rotation, thereby safeguarding the ankle from potential damage to other ligaments, bones, or soft tissues within the joint.
