Wrist/Thumb Pain Guide

Wrist and thumb pain are common conditions that can affect daily activities, from typing and texting to lifting and gripping objects. In many cases, discomfort is caused by repetitive strain, overuse, or sudden injury, but it can also result from underlying conditions such as nerve compression or joint degeneration.
The wrist and thumb form a highly complex, mobile structure composed of multiple small bones, joints, tendons, and ligaments. This intricate system enables precise movements such as pinching, grasping, and rotating. However, because these joints are used constantly in both work and sports, they are particularly vulnerable to inflammation, instability, and injury over time.
Common Symptoms of Wrist/Thumb Pain
Symptoms can vary depending on the underlying condition, ranging from a mild, dull ache to sharp or throbbing pain. You may notice discomfort in the wrist, at the base of the thumb, or radiating into the hand and forearm. Pain often worsens with repetitive movements such as typing, gripping, or twisting the wrist.
Other common symptoms include stiffness, swelling, reduced range of motion, and weakness when grasping objects. Some conditions may also cause numbness, tingling, or a “pins and needles” sensation—especially when nerves are involved, such as in carpal tunnel syndrome.
In more severe cases, you may experience instability in the thumb, difficulty pinching or holding items, or pain that persists even at rest, which may indicate ligament injuries, tendon inflammation, or chronic joint conditions.
