How to Tape an Ankle for Gymnastics

Gymnastics is a high-impact sport that demands explosive power, immense flexibility, and pinpoint precision. From powerful tumbling passes on the floor exercise to high-flying dismounts off the beam or bars, a gymnast's lower body absorbs a tremendous amount of shock. Because of this intense physical demand, the ankle is one of the most frequently injured body parts in gymnastics.

Proper support can be absolutely crucial for preventing sprains, strains, and rolling injuries, especially for young and developing athletes. Taping the ankle is a highly recommended and widely accepted practice among competitive gymnasts to provide targeted stability and joint protection during rigorous training sessions and high-stakes competitions.

Why Ankle Support is Crucial for Gymnasts

When athletes perform back handsprings, layouts, or vault landings, their ankles endure forces several times their body weight. Without adequate joint stabilization, the ankle ligaments can overstretch or tear, leading to painful sprains. Proper taping techniques restrict unnecessary side-to-side movement (inversion and eversion) while still allowing the forward-and-back motion (plantarflexion and dorsiflexion) necessary to point the toes and land safely.

Materials Needed for Proper Ankle Taping

Before you begin the taping process, make sure you have the right supplies on hand. Having a well-stocked gymnastics bag ensures you are always ready for practice.

              • Standard Athletic Tape: Preferably 1.5 inches wide. This size is ideal for contouring to the shape of the foot and lower leg.
              • Pre-Wrap (Pre-Tape): A thin foam wrap used under the athletic tape to prevent the adhesive from irritating the skin or pulling hair.
              • Bandage Scissors: Specialized scissors with a blunt tip for safely removing tape after practice.
              • Optional: A specialized ankle stabilizer brace for those who prefer an alternative to daily taping.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Tape an Ankle for Gymnastics

If you want to achieve maximum stability without compromising a gymnast's range of motion, follow these detailed steps.

              1. Preparation and Skin Care

Start by ensuring that the athlete's foot and ankle are completely clean and dry. Sweat, lotions, or natural oils will prevent the athletic tape from sticking properly. Keep the gymnast's foot at a 90-degree angle (flexed) throughout the entire taping process. If the athlete has hair around the lower calf and ankle, consider shaving the area or using pre-wrap to avoid painful pulling later.

              2. Apply the Pre-Wrap

If you are using pre-wrap to protect the skin, start at the mid-foot and wrap upward in a continuous, overlapping spiral. Cover the heel, the ankle bone, and continue about a third of the way up the lower calf. The pre-wrap creates a smooth, frictionless surface for the athletic tape to grip.

              3. Set Your Anchor Strips

Begin the actual taping by laying two to three anchor strips around the lower leg, approximately two to three inches above the prominent ankle bones (malleoli). Apply these strips directly to the skin or the top edge of the pre-wrap. These anchors serve as the foundation that securely holds the subsequent layers of tape in place.

              4. Create the Stirrup

The stirrup is the most important step for lateral stability. Take a piece of athletic tape and anchor it to the inside (medial side) of the upper anchor strips. Pull the tape straight down over the inside ankle bone, under the heel and arch of the foot, and pull it firmly back up the outside (lateral side) of the leg to attach to the opposite side of the anchor. Apply two to three stirrups, overlapping each by about half the tape width.

              5. Add Figure-Eight Strips

Continue adding tape strips in a "figure-eight" pattern to lock the heel and stabilize the entire joint. Start at the top of the foot, wrap down under the arch, come up around the back of the heel, and cross back over the top of the foot. Ensure that each piece overlaps slightly with the previous one to create a cohesive, supportive cast-like feel. Aim for at least three to four layers for a secure hold.

              6. Apply Final Anchors

Once the desired level of support is achieved through the stirrups and figure-eights, place additional horizontal anchor strips above and below the taped area. This "closes" the tape job, preventing the ends from peeling up or rolling down when the gymnast puts on socks or rubs their foot on the gymnastics mat.

              7. Check for Comfort and Circulation

It is absolutely essential to ensure that the tape is snug and supportive, but not too tight. The gymnast should be able to wiggle their toes easily, and the toes should maintain their normal color. Ask the athlete how it feels—if there’s excessive pressure, numbness, or a sense of restricted blood flow, you must safely cut the tape off and start over.

Taping vs. Modern Gymnastics Ankle Support

While mastering the art of taping is a highly valuable skill for gymnasts and coaches, relying solely on daily athletic tape can become expensive, time-consuming, and harsh on the skin. This is why many competitive athletes choose to incorporate reusable support systems into their gym bags.

Using an ankle brace designed for athletic performance can provide incredible, consistent benefits. Unlike tape, which naturally loosens and loses some of its rigidity after 20 minutes of intense sweating and tumbling, a high-quality brace provides uniform, unyielding compression throughout an entire practice.

Furthermore, these supports are incredibly easy to put on and take off, making them a highly convenient option for youth athletes who may not have a coach or athletic trainer available to tape them before every single event. Reusable braces are also highly adjustable, allowing the gymnast to easily tighten or loosen the support between rotations. Investing in dedicated gear is a long-term investment in a gymnast's safety, longevity, and overall joint health.
